Asymmetrical Competition

Josh Kopelman of Philadelphia has sparked a lively debate on asymmetrical competition on Redeye VC

Tim O'Reilly continues the discussion on O'Reilly Radar, noting that "While there are a lot of "build it and they will come" success stories, where the business model wasn't visible till long after the company became successful, there are also lots of opportunities that are defined by bringing new technologies (and with them new efficiences and user benefits) to existing markets. This is a post that every internet entrepreneur should read."

Sustainable Management Dictionary

A new Dictionary of Sustainable Management is available from Presidio School of Management . Their definition of Social Entrepreneurship follows:

The act of creating, organizing and managing an income-earning venture to serve an explicit social purpose. The primary mission of a socially entrepreneurial organization is to create value that benefits the health and well-being of individuals, society, or the natural environment, rather than to create wealth for shareholders. Social entrepreneurs draw upon principles and best practices developed in both the traditional business and non-profit worlds. Venture philanthropists and social venture funds are often sources of financial support for social entrepreneurs.

Death by Smiley Face

Tim O'Reilly comments on Richard Siklos's article, Death by Smiley Face at O'Reilly Radar in his post on Purpose-Driven Media, which includes links to the original NY Times article.
April 02, 2006

"Business theorists have started to grasp the risks to established businesses of asymmetric competition. ... sometimes companies are competing with rivals whose different business model transforms the nature of the conflict."

According to the NY Times "These are new-media ventures that leave the competition scratching their heads because they don't really aim to compete in the first place; their creators are merely taking advantage of the economics of the online medium to do something that they feel good about. They would certainly like to cover their costs and maybe make a buck or two, but really, they're not in it for the money. By purely commercial measures, they are illogical. ... they would represent the kind of terror that might keep you up at night: death by smiley face.""
